The Year 2026 Dubbed the Era of the Amphibian Adventure.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent Day of the Devs showcase was highly engaging, my primary conclusion was perhaps unexpected: I am declaring that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.

Exactly five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these amphibious creatures. Considering a gathering of frogs is called an army, it seems they are taking over the industry.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Frogs are anything but new to the gaming landscape. From the arcade classic Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a special place. Yet, their visibility has seemingly exploded in recent times.

A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an absolute deluge of results. While, some of these are obscure titles, a significant portion are legitimate Frog Games.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To understand this phenomenon, I performed a thorough analysis into the recent history of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My methodology was admittedly subjective, counting games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The data reveal an unmistakable trend: a consistent uptick from less than 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The amphibian's growing prominence in the cultural zeitgeist is partially visible elsewhere, such as the revival of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. But, the explosion in gaming appears uniquely pronounced.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

Frankly, this is a shift I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs have inherent creative potential for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are ideally shaped to be designed as endearing characters that tend to be a standout feature in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their stretchy limbs and grappling abilities facilitate a wide array of unique mechanics.

Many of the featured titles clearly utilize these traits. Take the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even begun—and the possibility for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the most significant year yet.

Should these games are received positively—and traditionally, games from this showcase often do—we could very well be entering a true amphibian entertainment revival.
