New research reveals that people who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users buying these medications must be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a return to starting weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Doctors believe the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
People who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if something activating and you're instantly ravenous," said an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Use is higher among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural management.
