British Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK's MoD.
The location, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in hills just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"Our fighter planes utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of access tunnels providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.
There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.
The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.
The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.
"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.
UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces involved in this strike for their skill and their bravery," he added. "Including them were a great many UK service members on duty over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, shows how British military are ready to step up, all year round, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."
Last December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "major assault" against Daesh sites in the country, after an ambush killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.
The United Nations estimates Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
